The area now called Montana was originally populated by Native American tribes. After that, the region was in French hands for a long time. Most of the state was acquired by the United States in a transaction that came to be called the Louisiana Purchase. The rest followed in 1846, when a treaty was made with the English on this subject; see Oregon Territory. The Indians in this area fiercely resisted the taking of their land. Well known is the battle of the Little Bighorn on June 25, 1876, in which General George Armstrong Custer was killed. On Nov. 8, 1889, Montana formally became, as the 41st, a state of the United States. The name Montana is believed to come from the Spanish word montaña, meaning “mountain.”
