Cinco de mayo (“five May”) is a holiday in Mexico and the United States that, as the name implies, is celebrated on May 5.
Cinco de mayo commemorates May 5, 1862, the day Mexico defeated a French army in the Battle of Puebla. President Benito Juárez declared four days later that May 5 would henceforth be a national holiday. Cinco de Mayo is celebrated mainly in Puebla.
